A software-defined WAN, designed as an overlay
Vexaro Mesh, now in development, is designed to deliver SD-WAN as a software overlay: lightweight gateways build a full mesh between your sites over any internet connection, governed by central policy, with no MPLS circuits or dedicated appliances.
What software SD-WAN means
SD-WAN separates how your wide-area network is controlled from the physical links it runs on. A software overlay takes this furthest: all the logic lives in software, and the underlay only has to provide connectivity.
An overlay over any link
In a software overlay, gateways form encrypted tunnels across whatever internet connection each site has (fiber, broadband or LTE), so the WAN runs on commodity links instead of dedicated private circuits.
Centralized, software-defined control
Routing and access policy are defined centrally and pushed to every site, so the network is configured from one console as software rather than box by box.
Application-aware steering and resilience
In SD-WAN generally, traffic is prioritized by importance and rerouted when a link degrades, so critical applications keep working when an underlay link is congested or fails. Vexaro Mesh does not claim these capabilities.
How Vexaro plans to approach SD-WAN
The full-mesh fabric designed to link sites is itself the WAN: managed, software-defined and planned to be priced per site.
Full-mesh data plane
Every site is designed to hold a direct tunnel to every other, so traffic takes the shortest path between locations rather than backhauling through a hub or a carrier's core.
Software gateways, cloud or self-hosted
Each site is planned to run a gateway as a VM or container, with the controller in the cloud or, on Enterprise, inside your own perimeter. There is no appliance to buy or rack.
Software overlay vs a legacy WAN
A comparison of two models: a software SD-WAN overlay and a traditional MPLS or appliance-based WAN. They are different approaches, not a ranking.
| Vexaro (software overlay, planned) | Legacy MPLS / appliance WAN | |
|---|---|---|
| Topology | Direct full mesh between sites | Hub-and-spoke / backhaul |
| Provisioning | Software, central console & API | Per-site boxes & circuits |
| Hardware | VM / container gateway | Dedicated appliance / router |
| Pricing unit | Per connected site | Per circuit / per appliance |
What we don't claim
Most "managed SD-WAN" offerings come from telecom carriers that bundle SD-WAN with last-mile circuits and on-site hardware. That is a different kind of service: we don't claim to be a carrier or to replace your ISP. Vexaro Mesh, in development, is designed as a software overlay over the internet links you already have. This page also doesn't name the tunnel protocol; the traffic is planned to be protected with modern cryptography.
Where a software SD-WAN fits
You want SD-WAN benefits (central control and direct site-to-site paths) over the internet links you already have, without signing up for MPLS circuits.
You'd rather run software gateways as VMs or containers than buy, ship and rack a dedicated appliance at every site.
You need the WAN to span offices, data centers and clouds as one fabric, not just connect physical branches.
You want pricing that tracks the number of sites, not the number of circuits or boxes.
